Stress Management for Bullied Teens

A teen who is being bullied is under a great deal of stress. That stress stems from being ridiculed in front of peers, being criticized, feeling bad about oneself, not knowing how to handle or deal with the situation maybe even feeling powerless about it and even the toxic self talk that can ensue.

Helping your teen deal with a bullying situation requires that you as a parent, take quick action.

Every case is different and you will need to include other adults and your own child to come up with an action plan for dealing with the bully. In no case should a teen be forced to continue in an unhealthy environment. There are other options available to your child for healthier environments if needed.

In this article I want to specially deal with the stress that is associated with the bullying.

One of the best stress relievers is simply listening to your teen. Allow them to lean on your shoulder and express themselves completely.

Next, use some stress management techniques to help your teen deal with the stress that stems from the bullying situation. This includes exercise, meditation, muscle relaxation exercises, journaling, deep breathing and positive self talk.

All of these things can be done with your teen which will help your teen know that you completely support him or her. Make sure that simultaneously you are helping your teen develop strong self confidence or restore it. Bullying can be very damaging to a teen?s self esteem and identity.  Use positive affirmations to help your teen build up their self confidence and increase feelings of self esteem. The following affirmations work very well for children and teens.

  • I am strong. I control my body and my mind
  • My energy is strong
  • My spirit is strong.
  • I radiate calm and strength.
  • I am in control of myself, my reactions and my feelings at all times.
  • I am my own boss.
  • I walk tall and proud.
  • People notice the strength I emit when I walk in a room or down a hall.
  • I walk with my head lifted high and look everyone in the eye.
  • I am friendly and kind
  • My energy says it all and my energy says "strength".
  • I am feeling better and better inside each day.
  • Each day I grow stronger and feel free to be me.
  • I am proud to be me.
  • I am an awesome person!

Print these affirmations out and give them to your teen, or do them together. Say them slowly and really take each one in. Go through them all each evening and each day you might suggest that your teen focus on one affirmation for that particular day.
